On Sunday, March 9, 2014, at 7:30 pm, the East Windsor Beth El Synagogue Genealogy Club is sponsoring a discussion on “The Jewish Origins of Roosevelt, New Jersey” . Roosevelt Historian, Michael Ticktin, will speak about the origins of the Borough of Roosevelt (formerly Jersey Homesteads), which was established in 1936 as a New Deal community for Jewish garment workers. Jersey Homesteads was one of about 100 communities established by the Roosevelt administration under various programs during the 1930s, and was the only one specifically intended to serve a Jewish population. He will be showing a video produced by the Roosevelt Arts Project called 'Jersey Homesteads in the Architectural Vanguard.' Beth El Synagogue is located at 50 Maple Steam Road, East Windsor NJ, 08520. Please call the Synagogue Office with any questions, (609) 443-4454; www.bethel.net.
