Topic: The Politics of Taking and Settling the Continental United States in the 19th Century Speaker: Paul Frymer, Associate Professor of Politics at Princeton University The talk will be focused on the massive geographical expansion of the U.S. In its first century, going from 13 colonies to the 48 continental states. Professor Frymer will describe in both how and why we ended up with these geographic boundaries—why we ended up with the current U.S., but not a larger or smaller version, and how we accomplished these tasks. He will focus in particular on the politics of this process, and the role of the U.S. Federal government in successfully bringing about expansion and settlement.
