TJC - Can Modern Cantors be Spellbinding?

4:00PM - 4:30PM

The Jewish Center

Workshop: “Can Modern Cantors Be Spellbinding?”with Tahl Ben-Yehuda Student Cantor Tahl Ben-Yehuda will discuss the history of the cantorate and its evolution to today. How has the role changed? Was the traditional image of cantor as “entertainer par excellence” ever accurate, and why was he perceived this way? What did he do that was spellbinding, and how was the spell broken? If male and female cantors no longer cast this spell in the same way, what is the role of the cantor in modern pulpits? Tahl will share a few cantorial pieces in the traditional style and discuss the role of nusach, the modes and motifs in which our prayers continue to be sung despite the evolution of the cantorial performance. Sunday afternoon, Feb. 3; 4:00 to 5:30 p.m. (Social Hall)
